Equine Rotating Internship- Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital.

Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital (GVEH) has opened applications for the Rotating Internship Program, commencing in July 2024. Proudly running for over 30 years, the program is constantly evolving to cater to the needs of newly graduated, modern veterinarians. The standard internship term is 13 months however GVEH is always considerate of requests for shorter terms.

Candidates are required to write a case report or participate in ongoing research projects, with dedicated time off to complete these tasks.  As the University of Melbourne equine teaching partner, interns will also have the opportunity to assist teaching final year DVM 4 veterinary students on equine rotations. 

With Diplomates or Fellows in Equine Surgery, Medicine, Emergency & Critical Care, Reproduction and Dentistry, interns are provided with unparalleled expertise and experience, in which to develop their skills at GVEH.

The hospital caseload is busy and diverse, with the facilities equipped with digital radiography, ultrasonography, gastroscopy, endoscopy, scintigraphy, in house laboratory, extensive stabling, two surgeries and the support of an experienced nursing team.

During the program, interns rotate through surgery, medicine, reproduction, anaesthesia, consultations, and night duty.

Afterhours duties are shared equally and time off in lieu is provided for weekends on call.  Continuing professional development opportunities are regularly provided by in house specialists.

The successful applicant must possess a veterinary degree registerable with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria, Australia.

Postgraduate Internships (6 months)

GVEH also offers one or two rotating internships of 6-months duration.  These shorter duration internships are open to recently graduated veterinarians, with at least 12 months post graduate experience, who are seeking to improve their skills and confidence in equine practice.  Interns undertaking the 6-month programme gain experience in equine medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, anaesthesia and reproduction during the busy season of August through to February each year.

6-month interns participate in the after-hours roster with yearlong interns, with a 1 in 2 nights and 1 in 2 weekend rota.  Typically, during the season 3 interns are ‘on call’ each night or weekend to help distribute the workload.

Eligibility to work in Australia

Interns must possess a veterinary degree that is recognised with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria, Australia.  International interns accepting a 6-month position will need to obtain a working holiday visa prior to starting at GVEH.  Yearlong interns will receive assistance from the hospital for their visa application.
