Current Interns 2010
!2 month positions:
Carl Barker: Raised on a vegetable farm in Stanthorpe, Carl had to decide between a career as a professional soccer player and a veterinarian and thankfully for the soccer world he chose the GVEH. A 2009 Queensland Uni graduate this intern loves his red wine, claims to bench press more than his
own weight and watching this unflappable vet wrestle a foal you’d believe it! Having worked for one of Brisbane’s leading equine veterinary surgeons through his time at the University of QLD Carl’s main interests are orthopaedics and racetrack medicine although he’s taken a shine to repro since starting at GVEH. The only concern we have for Carl is his health. It cant be good practice to
gain that much weight in such a short time.
Kristie Clarke: Kristie is a passionate and personable vet who grew up riding horses on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland. A 2007 graduate from Sydney University, Kristie worked as a mixed animal vet in Whittlesea for 18 months then locumed in Kinglake, Bendigo and
Melbourne. In the aftermath of the 2009 bushfires she worked tirelessly treating the affected animals, which inspired her to then spend some time in Nepal as a volunteer vet. Kristie loves the challenge of working up lameness in performance horses and interpreting diagnostic imaging. She is working towards the very broad aim of being able to do/ diagnose almost anything in any horse when she goes
out into equine practice. Kristie’s signature dish is platters of tiny decorated cupcakes, which will frequently be found in the tearoom.
Chris Elliott: Chris is a 2007 Queensland graduate who started out in a mixed animal veterinary clinic on the Mornington Peninsular then went to the UK to gain invaluable experience spending a year working in the ambulatory department of the University of Edinburgh
Equine Hospital. Chris says he is a real team player. Passionate about all things sports medicine, he was lucky enough to be chosen as the team veterinarian for the Australian Paralympic Equestrian team at the Beijing Games in 2008. Chris likes to spend his “time off” vetting at as many 3-Day events as possible, aiming to gain FEI accreditation. When he’s not re-heating a frozen dinner or
researching the latest journal articles Chris spends his evenings off playing rugby.
